A Short Deployment
I just returned from a four month deployment to Iraq with Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). During the deployment I spent most of my time at the large base in Balad. I was specifically assigned to Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component (CJSOAC) which has a small compound on the base. There I met Chaplain Jim Murphy, another CFGC Chaplain, who is serving with the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.
The deployment went very well, and I enjoyed the ministry there. Chapel attendance more than tripled during my time there, and I thoroughly enjoyed organizing a hearts and minds mission to one of the local schools near the base. My home church collected school supplies, soccer balls and dolls for 200 children, and we distributed them at the school on the last day of my deployment.
I had the privilege of leading our Special Tactics Squadron Commander to Christ. He wanted to be baptized but decided to wait until he returned home so his family could share the experience.
