A Chaplain’s Update – 22 Dec 06

1. Remember the reason for this season. God intervened by sending us the gift of Jesus. Without Jesus we would still be in our sins and incapable of any intimacy with God. Please take time to worship our Lord and Savior during this wonderful time of year. Focus on God, not your own emotions or feelings. It is all about God and not about us.

2. Remember our soldiers in harms way. Our soldiers are not politicians. They are Americans committed to doing their jobs to bring freedom to others and to protect our lives from those who desire us harm. Pray that God will use the circumstances of this current war to lead soldiers to committing their lives to Him.

3. Remember our families who are dealing with loss. Since my arrival last summer in Special Forces, we have sustained many deaths, both in Afghanistan and Iraq. Pray for those left behind. Pray that the surviving spouses can minister to each other. Pray that Moms and Dads can deal with the loss of their child. Pray that children can learn to depend upon God, even as their own father is no longer with them.

4. Remember our soldiers who have been injured. I now make regular visits to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. On my last visit I was able to spend time with soldiers who are adjusting to loss of limbs, eyes, and bodily functions. In my discussions with them, I find that their faith in God varies from strong to questioning. Pray that God will use their new realities to lead them to understanding that God does not promise any one on this globe certain lifestyles or blessings. He does give all the opportunity to trust Him in the circumstances that we are in. Again, this life is not about us. It is all about Him.
