October Letter from Afghanistan
All of us here in Afghanistan give you all in the US a big ‘Hello.’ The days are going by fast as we train the local Afghanistan Army and as our unit ministry team reach out to soldiers with God’s love. I was just thinking today how much I really love my work! I have worked in other ministries before, but this is the first one where I feel I have found home. This is what I love to do and want to do for as long as God will let me.

We are so privileged to have a military force here that represents the United States. Our soldiers are true blue, and they have not forgotten the work ethic that is so foundational in our country. Parents and political leaders would be proud to see what our soldiers do here day in and day out without a break. Plus, sending me as a Chaplain reminds them that we, as a country, care about the spiritual side of their lives as well. Soldiers are valued here. It is a standard that is very high, to say the least.

The camp climate is only getting better with time here. We see improvements every day, and the soldiers are finding life-long friends as they work to accomplish the mission. We as a group have decided to view this desert experience as one that makes us better and stronger. Nothing of worth is ever easy, and our soldiers know that. We are setting an example that will affect this country for generations to come.

The letters and gift boxes are such a blessing. The soldiers here all share the goods you send and no one goes without the necessities, even some comfort items like coffee and mixed nuts. NOTHING goes to waste that you all have sent. We are even able to give to the local people and to orphanages. The people are sometimes in awe here in response to the generosity. We do appreciate the shampoo, lotion, toothpaste and tooth brushes. These items go fast here because we do not have a formal PX shop. Some of the soldiers will go to a larger camp and bring in some goods to sell in a b-hut, and this does help. However, your kindness is always a resounding ‘thank you’ to the US forces here, and we get excited just to get a box from you.

I will close for now. God be with you as you serve Him,
