The Pledge of Allegiance

I know this may not be of great interest to all of you, but I just want to let you know of the latest happenings here at Broken Arrow Oklahoma Senior High.

We are into the 8th week of school, and it was decided this year to NOT have the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. Ever since I have been here (three years now), we have had the Pledge every day. This year, they (don’t know who “they” are) decided to just have the Pledge on Monday’s. That just did not sit well with our students and some of their parents. Not only did they protest this decision, they also suggested that each week we have a little “mini-lesson” during the morning announcements on why the Pledge of Allegiance is so important.

I was amazed at the kids in my class when the Pledge came over our classroom TV. They almost shouted it out. I’ve heard the other teachers say the same is happening in their classes. I know that we often hear of the negative things going on in our public school system (much of it a partial truth) so I wanted to share with you something that I felt was good. Yes, there are some problems, BUT, when you have a group of 17-18 year-olds stand up and say, “We will honor our country and our flag,” I think it shows that there is still much to be proud of.
